The Cabinet Card, first used in 1862 for landscape-photography by George Wharton Simpson (1825–1880) and George Washington Wilson (1823–1893), was a larger sized photograph, which was then adopted for photographic portraits in the late 1860s. The thin photographs, usually albumin prints, were generally mounted on cardboard measuring approximately 4¼ by 6½ inches. Due to the progress in photographical technique it became the preferred portrait photograph format from the 1880s on and replaced the Carte de Visite. In contrast to postcards or some Cartes de Visite, the Cabinet Cards often displayed artistically designed logos and information about rewards of the photographer on the backside of the card to advertise the photographer’s studio. At the begin of the 20th century the Cabinet Cards got replaced by the more and more popular postcards.

The Carte de Visite (CDV) is a smaller photograph of about 2.5 inches width and 4.12 inches height (5,5 x 9 cm). It was also usually an albumin print mounted on cardboard. There were specific designed photo-albums available for collecting the cards.
The first CDV got created in the mid 1850s, and the parisian photographer André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri received a patent on his type of CDV with the size 6 x 9 cm in 1854.
Easy and inexpensive reproduction made them widely popular in Europe and the United States.
With the higher photographic quality of the Cabinet Card and later the postcards, the Carte de Visite was more and more replaced by these new formats during the early 20th century.
