Carolina Otéro - La Belle Otéro
(Agustina Otéro Iglesias)
* November 4th 1868, Valga / Pontevedro (Spain)
† April, 10th 1965, Nizza (France)
La Belle Otéro, a Spanish dancer, actress and courtesan of the Belle Epoque, was for sure one of the most notorious women in Europe's high society. She had numerous liaisons to royals and aristocrats. Together with Liane de Pougy and Emilienne d'Alençon they were known as "Les Grandes Trois" (Courtesans). Probably she was also one of the most photographed women of the Belle Epoque, next to Lina Cavalieri and Cléo de Mérode. She was especially famous for her extraordinary and luxurious jewelry. After the Belle Epoque her glory declined and she lost huge amounts of money with gambling and finished her life in quite modest circumstances at Nizza, where she died at age 96.
