Being fascinated by oriental landscapes, culture and beauty after a trip through Tunisia, the photographer Rudolf Franz Lehnert and his partner Ernst Heinrich Landrock started their photographic atelier and business in Tunis in 1904. Several books document their successful work in Tunisia in the following years. During World War I all their material got confiscated by the French government. After the war and moving from Switzerland to Egypt, Lehnert and Landrock re-established their studio in Cairo, 1924.
Later in 1930 Lehnert moved with his family to Tunisia and opened a photo studio in Tunis, while Landrock stayed at the store in Cairo. In 1938 Landrock sells his shares of the business to his stepson Kurt Lambelet and returns to Germany. The company firmed then under the name Lehnert & Landrock - K. Lambelet successor. Lehnert passed away 1948 in Redeyef, South Tunisia. Landroch, living in southern Germany died in 1966. The family of Kurt Lambelet expanded the business in Cairo, focussing more on books and art prints. Kurt Lambelet passed away in 1997 at age 92. His son Edouard Lambelet is now owner of the Lehnert & Landrock Bookshop and Art Gallery in Cairo.
