The brothers William Downey (1829-1915) and Daniel Downey (1831-1881) were Victorian studio photographers, starting their business in 1855 with a photo studio in South Shields, the place they were born.
In 1863 they opened their second photo studio on Eldon Square in Newcastle on Tyne. William Downey founded their later studio in London, Ebury Street in 1872, while his brother Daniel continued the studio in Newcastle. William's son, William Edward Downey (1855-1908), performed most of the photo sessions with the Royal family during the Edwardian era.
The W. & D. Downey photo studio became famous as the photographers of the Queen and other royal families of Europe. Their probably most famous photos are the portraits of Queen Victoria.
So far we were not able to find a photo of the photographers themselves.
