Das süße Mädel
und die erotische Photographie im Wien der Jahrhundertwende
Album Verlag, Wien, 1994
120 pages, 112 black & white images
German language
For this book the authors collected a large variety of black & white photos by photographers from Vienna at the time of the turn of the century. In an accompanying text the authors describe the emerging popularity of photography in Vienna beginning in the second half of the 19th century and the role of women as models. Otto Schmidt is mentioned as one of the most well known and productive photographers of that time. Next to Paris, Vienna was also a capital of erotic photography. Similar to other countries the photographers of erotic photography had to remain anonymous because of legal reasons. The pretense of studies or art was the "fig-leaf" and the only way to publish photos of nude models.
