This exhibition catalogue portays the history of the main publisher of postcards before World War I in Europe, the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft NPG from Berlin. The company was founded by Arthur Schwarz in 1894. He established several affiliate companies in Europe until 1914, and the NPG and their affiliates became the leading mass producers of postcards on silver bromide photopaper ("Kilometer-Photographie"). In the years before World War I, the companies had to face an economical crisis due to overproduction. Schwarz left the company in 1913, and NPG stopped production in April 1921.
The book collects valuable historical information about photo-printing technique and postcard production in the late 19th and early 20th century and especially the leading company NPG. We highly recommend this book for everyone interested in vintage postcards.
