Réjane
(Gabrielle-Charlotte Réju)
* June 5th 1856, Paris (France)
† June 14th 1920, Asnieres-sur-Seine (France)
Besides Sarah Bernhardt, Réjane was the most popular actress in Paris during the Belle Epoque. While Bernhardt was more the dramatic and serious actress, Réjane stood for a more popular and comedian style of theatrical play. Like Bernhardt, she owned her own theatre at Paris. Despite being so poular at her time, compared to Bernhardt, Réjane is pretty much forgotten today.
Fortunately in 2001 a very wonderful large format monography with plenty of beautiful photographs, mostly by Reutlinger, got published together with an essay by Francois Baudot.
Gabrielle Réju is buried at cemetery Passy, Paris.
